In today's world, safe and reliable mail service is more important than ever. Cedar Ridge Estates residents have access to mail services via USPS Cluster Box Units (CBU's) from Mount Vernon Post Office. But as mail services have modernized, so have the challenges faced by residents – especially theft. Here's how you can use these services efficiently and safely.
Mail Delivery in Cedar Ridge Estates
At Cedar Ridge Estates, we use USPS Cluster Box Units (CBU's) to deliver our mail. These CBUs are a centralized system that allows for efficient delivery and pickup of mail by residents and USPS workers alike. Mail from the Mount Vernon Post Office is delivered directly to these CBUs, saving time and resources.
To ensure you receive your mail promptly, you should aim to pick it up daily. However, if you're unable to collect your mail, consider using the USPS mail hold service. It's an excellent option to ensure your mail is secure until you can collect it.
Rising Tide of Mail Theft
Unfortunately, with the rise of digital and electronic communications, traditional mail theft has become an increasingly lucrative avenue for criminals. In recent years, criminals have been devising ways to break into CBUs, with neighborhoods north of Seattle, including Mount Vernon, noticing an uptick.
These crimes have increased notably since the Covid-19 pandemic, with crime moving steadily northward. A combination of factors, including increased online shopping and overall economic instability, have contributed to this unfortunate trend.

The CBU Relocation: A Turning Point for Cedar Ridge Estates
Winter 2020 - 2021 marked a significant change in our community's mail service history. Faced with multiple break-ins, theft, and extensive damage to the CBU's, the Homeowners Association (HOA) was forced to reassess their current mail delivery system.
The Mount Vernon Post Office, in light of the ongoing issues, refused to deliver mail to our damaged CBU's. This necessitated a collective decision. The HOA held a vote to move the CBU's from Falcon Court to the cul-de-sac at the end of Estate Drive near Egret Place.
After a close count, the relocation was approved with 12 votes in favor, 10 against, and one abstention. It's important to note that while USPS provided the initial CBU's when our community was formed, the HOA owns these units. Consequently, new CBUs had to be purchased to ensure the continuation of our mail services.

USPS Challenges: Nationwide Issues Impacting Delivery
USPS, like many organizations, has faced its share of challenges during these uncertain times. Labor shortages have hit hard, affecting delivery schedules and sometimes even accuracy. These issues extend beyond Cedar Ridge Estates, with post offices nationwide feeling the impact.
Nationwide, USPS is dealing with other problems such as a massive increase in package volume due to the growth of online shopping, outdated infrastructure struggling to keep pace with demand, and ongoing financial pressures. These challenges manifest in various ways, including delayed deliveries and misplacement of letter mail and packages.
Here at Cedar Ridge Estates, residents have reported mail and packages being placed in the wrong boxes. While these issues are significant, please remember that they are part of a larger nationwide trend. Rest assured, USPS and the HOA are working diligently to overcome these challenges and ensure the continued security and reliability of our mail service.
Increasing Security Measures: Neighborhood Associations
In response to the increase in mail theft, neighborhood associations are exploring additional security measures to protect their CBUs. These can include surveillance cameras, improved lighting around CBUs, and strengthened locks. Moreover, a neighborhood watch program can be an effective deterrent against thieves.
Community members should stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the local law enforcement. Remember, a secure neighborhood starts with the active involvement of its residents.
In conclusion, while we enjoy the convenience of USPS CBUs for mail delivery in Cedar Ridge Estates, we must also be aware of the challenges they present. By staying informed, alert, and proactive, we can ensure our mail services remain secure and reliable.
